About standards and sizes

No standard defines how apparatus is drawn in a setup diagram. The parts follow the way glassware is drawn in textbooks and laboratory manuals. The joint sizes in the attributes (for example 14/23, 24/29, 29/32) are common sizes that are given only for labelling, the real size of your glassware and its connections come from the supplier.

The parts are our own simplified drawings, not supplier drawings and not true to relative size, and the library is not certified. It helps to draw a setup for a lab manual, a method description or a teaching lab, it does not replace the method, a risk assessment or the safety rules of your laboratory. Check every setup against your procedure before you use it.

What is in the library?

Flasks and reactors, beakers, tubes and bottles, condensers, columns and adapters, funnels, filtration and chromatography, measuring and transfer, stands, clamps and heating, gas, vacuum and cooling, complete setups, structure templates, and reaction arrows and marks. The page above lists every group with its count.

Are the sizes real?

No. The parts are drawn at a diagram scale so that a setup can be read on one sheet, a single part is at most about 32 mm high. Use the SIZE attribute for the real capacity and take the dimensions of your glassware from the supplier.

Can I use the symbols in commercial projects?

Yes. They are free to use and modify in your own projects, including commercial ones. They are provided as is, without warranty.

Can I draw chemical structures with the library?

For quick figures, yes: there are rings, heterocycles, bonds, wedges, Newman projections, a few functional groups, arrows, charges and brackets, all with the same bond length. For full structure drawings and names use a chemistry drawing program, the templates are meant for simple schemes in a drawing.

Can I change a symbol or add attributes?

Yes. Open the DWG, edit a block with BEDIT to change it or add attributes, and save. To update drawings that already contain the block, run ATTSYNC or replace the block. Make a backup first: attribute values can be lost if ATTSYNC is used carelessly.

Where do I find a ready-made set of these symbols for AutoCAD?

AutoCAD itself ships only a small set of sample blocks, so a full symbol set has to come from a library. Download the ZIP on this page and open the DWG: every symbol is a block. Insert one with INSERT (Blocks palette, Libraries tab, then pick the DWG) or drag it from DesignCenter (ADCENTER). You can also download a single symbol on its own.
