Free AutoCAD reflected ceiling plan symbols (DWG): ceiling grids, lights, diffusers, sprinklers

Reflected ceiling plan: 234 ready-made AutoCAD blocks (DWG), free to download and use in your own projects, as a ZIP or one symbol at a time.

234 blocks at real size for the reflected ceiling plan, drawn as you see the ceiling looking up: ceiling grids and boards (600 x 600, 600 x 1200 and 300 x 1200 tiles, tile grids, plasterboard sheets and joints, fire rated board, metal strip, baffle, open cell, timber slat and stretch ceilings, wall angle, main runner, cross tees, hanger and brace points); recessed downlights, adjustable spots, wall washers and square downlights; LED panels, troffers and linear lights up to 3000 mm, cove light, LED tape and light slots; surface, pendant and decorative lights, track lights, emergency lights, exit signs and ceiling fans; supply diffusers (4-way, 2-way, 1-way, round, perforated and slot), return, egg crate and transfer grilles, extract fans, cassette and ducted units, VAV boxes, ducts above the ceiling and air curtains; sprinklers, smoke, heat, CO, gas, flame and beam detectors, sounders, strobes, loudspeakers, motion and presence sensors, CCTV, access points and smoke vents; access hatches, bulkheads, soffits, level changes, coffers, domes, skylights, curtain and blind pockets, shadow gaps, cornices, control joints, acoustic clouds and baffles, and the beams, trays, pipes and columns that sit above the ceiling; and the tags a ceiling plan needs: height, level, ceiling type, finish, luminaire type, air terminal, keynote, grid, section, match line and north arrow

Attributes for parts lists

Every block carries a tag you can number and invisible attributes for the schedule. A luminaire holds ITEM_TYPE, SIZE, POWER_W, LUMEN, CCT_K, CIRCUIT and EMERGENCY; an air terminal holds NECK_SIZE, AIRFLOW_M3H and SYSTEM; a sprinkler, detector or sensor holds ZONE, ADDRESS and COVERAGE_M2; a hatch or ceiling feature holds LEVEL_MM and FIRE_RATING; a grid or board holds MATERIAL, FINISH and FIRE_RATING.

Export the blocks of a ceiling plan to Excel with BlockSync to list luminaires, diffusers, sprinklers and detectors as a schedule, check the counts against the specification and write the changes back in one run, with preview and backup.

How to use the library

  1. Unzip the file and open the DWG. Copy the symbols you need into your plan, or drag the blocks in from DesignCenter (ADCENTER).
  2. The blocks are drawn at real size in millimetres, 1 drawing unit = 1 mm, so a 600 x 600 tile is 600 x 600 units on the plan. Every block is centred on its middle, so a light or a diffuser snaps onto the centre of a tile, and a tile grid block can be laid over the room and the lights placed on its joints.
  3. A reflected ceiling plan has the same orientation as the floor plan: it shows the ceiling as if the floor were transparent and you looked up, so it is not mirrored. Draw your walls and grid lines as on the floor plan, then place the ceiling blocks over them. The grid blocks are one tile, a tile grid and the main runners and cross tees, so you can show the grid at the level of detail you need.
  4. Everything that is above the ceiling and not seen from the room, such as ducts, beams, cable trays, pipes and the head of a partition, is drawn with a dashed outline, so it reads as hidden. Ceiling units that you see from below, such as cassettes, diffusers and lights, are drawn with a solid outline.

About the drawings

There is no standard for the drawings of a reflected ceiling plan. The blocks follow the common practice of architects and building services engineers: a tile as a square with its frame, a downlight as a circle, a panel with diagonals, a diffuser with throw lines to the corners, a sprinkler as a circle with a cross and a detector as a circle with its letter.

The blocks are our own drawings, not copies, and the library is not certified. The sizes are typical ceiling modules and supplier sizes; the real size depends on the product you specify, so check every part against its catalogue. Fire ratings, sprinkler and detector spacing, lighting levels and air flows depend on your local code and on the design, and are not set by this library.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reflected ceiling plan mirrored?
No. A reflected ceiling plan is the view looking up at the ceiling, drawn in the same orientation as the floor plan, so the walls, rooms and grid lines coincide with the floor plan and nothing is mirrored. That is why you can put the blocks over your floor plan layout and check the ceiling against the rooms below.
Which tile and board sizes are included?
Ceiling tiles of 600 x 600, 600 x 1200, 300 x 1200, 300 x 300 and 450 x 450 mm, tile grids from 1200 x 1200 to 3600 x 3600 mm, plasterboard sheets of 1200 x 2400 and 900 x 1800 mm with joints, a fire rated board, and metal strip, baffle, open cell, timber slat and stretch ceilings, with wall angle, main runner, cross tee and hanger points for the grid.
Can I use the symbols in commercial projects?
Yes. They are free to use and modify in your own projects, including commercial ones. They are provided as is, without warranty. Please do not redistribute or resell the library; see the library terms.
How are items above the ceiling shown?
With a dashed outline: ducts and a ducted fan coil, VAV boxes, beams, cable trays, pipes and the head of a partition. They are drawn so that you can see a clash with a light or a diffuser without mistaking the item for a ceiling unit. The soffit and bulkhead blocks also have a dashed version for what lies above the cut plane.
Can I change a symbol or add attributes?
Yes. Open the DWG, edit a block with BEDIT to change it or add attributes, and save. To update drawings that already contain the block, run ATTSYNC or replace the block. Make a backup first: attribute values can be lost if ATTSYNC is used carelessly.
Where do I find a ready-made set of these symbols for AutoCAD?
AutoCAD itself ships only a small set of sample blocks, so a full symbol set has to come from a library. Download the ZIP on this page and open the DWG: every symbol is a block. Insert one with INSERT (Blocks palette, Libraries tab, then pick the DWG) or drag it from DesignCenter (ADCENTER). You can also download a single symbol on its own.
