Attributes for parts lists

Every block has a visible tag (F01 for a piece of furniture, T01 for a table, C01 for a chair, B01 for a bed, S01 for a room set). The data for a schedule are invisible attributes: DESCRIPTION, WIDTH_MM, DEPTH_MM, HEIGHT_MM, MATERIAL, FINISH and QTY, plus MANUFACTURER and MODEL.

Width, depth and height are prefilled with the size named in the block, so a furniture schedule can be read straight from the drawing. Export the blocks of all drawings to Excel with BlockSync to build a schedule or a quantity list, check it and write the changes back.

How to use the library

  1. Unzip the file and open the DWG. Copy the symbols you need into your plan, or drag the blocks in from DesignCenter (ADCENTER).
  2. Insert the blocks at scale 1 in model space; they are drawn at real size in millimetres. The catalog in the file shows them at 1:100.
  3. A piece is inserted at the centre of its back edge: sofas, cabinets and beds sit with the back or the head against the wall and the front faces into the room. Round tables, stools and rugs are inserted at their centre. A room set is inserted at the centre of the back edge of its main piece. Use ROTATE for other directions and MIRROR for the other hand.
  4. Every group of pieces also comes as a room set: a block that holds the sofa, armchairs, coffee table and rug of a living room, a farm table with its chairs or benches and a hutch, a kitchen with range, sink and island, a quilt bed with nightstands and chest, or a fire pit with six Adirondack chairs. Insert the set for a quick layout and explode it when you want to move single pieces; the same pieces are in the library on their own. Cabinets show their door swing as a dashed leaf and arc, so you can see the clearance in front.

About the style

There is no standard for furniture plan symbols. The rustic and farmhouse look is drawn after its common traits: plank tops with breadboard ends and peg dots, chunky square posts, trestle and X-end bases, ladder-back chairs with woven cord seats, slipcovered sofas with rolled arms, patchwork quilts, stone hearths with coursed rubble, cast-iron ranges and braided rugs.

These symbols are our own drawings after the common design conventions of the style, and the library is not certified against any standard. Check them against your project and change the blocks if yours differ.

Frequently asked questions

Are these symbols to a standard?
No. Furniture plan symbols have no binding standard, and rustic or farmhouse is a design look, not a rule set. The blocks follow its common traits and can be changed to match your project.
What are the room sets?
Ready-made groups of pieces as one block each, for example a living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee table and braided rug, a living room around a stone fireplace, a farm table with eight chairs and a hutch, a kitchen with range, sink, island and four stools, a quilt bed with nightstands and a blanket chest, a mudroom entry, porch rockers, a porch swing or a fire pit with six chairs. Explode a set to work on single pieces.
Can I use the symbols in commercial projects?
Yes. They are free to use and modify in your own projects, including commercial ones. They are provided as is, without warranty. Please do not redistribute or resell the library; see the library terms.
Can I use these together with the architectural furniture library?
Yes. They use the same units, the same attributes and the same insertion rule, so the libraries can be used in one plan. This one adds the rustic and farmhouse look; the architectural library has the plain everyday pieces, the doors, the windows and the bathroom and kitchen fittings, and the farm and livestock library has the buildings and animal housing.
Can I change a symbol or add attributes?
Yes. Open the DWG, edit a block with BEDIT to change it or add attributes, and save. To update drawings that already contain the block, run ATTSYNC or replace the block. Make a backup first: attribute values can be lost if ATTSYNC is used carelessly.
Are the floor, wallpaper and material patterns hatches?
No, they are blocks made of thin lines. Insert one, scale it to the area you want to show and copy it to cover more (ARRAY), or use it as a legend sample next to your finish schedule. For large areas the hatch patterns of your CAD program are the better choice.
Should I download this library or one of the smaller topic libraries (furniture, doors and windows, bathroom and kitchen, stairs, walls and roofs)?
This one has everything in a single file. If you need only one topic, the topic library holds the same blocks in a smaller file, and the furniture library adds front elevations of the furniture.
Where do I find a ready-made set of these symbols for AutoCAD?
AutoCAD itself ships only a small set of sample blocks, so a full symbol set has to come from a library. Download the ZIP on this page and open the DWG: every symbol is a block. Insert one with INSERT (Blocks palette, Libraries tab, then pick the DWG) or drag it from DesignCenter (ADCENTER). You can also download a single symbol on its own.

Count the symbols and build a parts list

Because ratings and part numbers are attributes, the symbols of a whole project can be counted and listed without opening the drawings. Export the blocks to Excel, total them with a pivot table and write corrections back in one run, with preview and backup.
